You are working as a summer intern for an educational film company, which has been commissioned by the BBC (British Broadcasting Company) to produce a documentary about British science in the nineteenth century. Originally, a two-part series was planned. The first episode would be about Charles Darwin and the second about William Thomson, Lord Kelvin. During pre-production, the BBC receives its quarterly revenue report. Due to unexpectedly low ratings of the hit shows Dr. Who and Killing Eve, the network announces across-the-board budget cuts. The documentary must be reduced to a single episode. Your supervisor, who recalls that you once took a class on the history of science, asks you to write a report recommending whether the shortened documentary should focus on Darwin or Kelvin. She instructs you to leave aside the issue of who was more famous or influential. She wants to know, which man’s career will better serve as an example of the the most important trends and characteristics of nineteenth-century British science and its relationship to broader social, economic and political developments. Write the report.
Your report should begin with an introductory paragraph that states your recommendation (Darwin or Kelvin) and summarizes your reasons. The body of the report should consist of a minimum of five paragraphs in which you identify some of the most important features of nineteenth-century British science and discuss how they are exemplified by Darwin and/or Kelvin. (In arguing that Darwin or Kelvin is the best choice overall, you may still wish to acknowledge that some important aspects of nineteenth-century British science are better represented by the other man.) Each paragraph in the body of the paper should make a distinct point, expressed in a topic sentence, and should use specific examples to back up its claims. When making use of evidence from readings, make use of a combination of paraphrase and quotation. In both cases, provide citations. Conclude the report with a summary of your recommendation and the reasons for it.
Citations should consist of the last name of the author and the page number, for example: “Morus, 134.” Use the page numbers of the original texts, not those that may have been added to the course reader.  You can find full bibliographic for all readings in the reading guides and in the reader’s table of contents. (A bibliography at the end of the essay is not required.) Do not refer to readings from outside the course. You do not need to provide citations to lectures. Avoid excessive quotation, especially from secondary sources. (See Essay Tips Links to an external site.for clarification.)
