The compare and contrast concept is important for our continued development of critical thinking regardless of what is being compared and contrasted. We have all heard the cliche adage, it’s like comparing apples and oranges. Of course, this is trying to convey stark differences. However, if we dig a bit deeper, there are more aspects in common than the adage indicates. Apples and oranges are both….

etc.
The adage, of course, relies on the stark differences like how juicy an orange is compared to the crunch of an apple, the thickness of their skins, the different growing environments, etc. The point I am trying to make here is that the compare and contrast concept works when we are able to dig deeper into the details and not rely on quick surface-level judgments.
Your Essay Concept (Topic and Direction):
The essay you will be constructing will use compare and contrast to formulate an argument; thus, your essay will need to have some sort of debatable topic, a stance, a counterargument, a purpose, an intended audience, and supporting evidence. For a general direction, you can go with one of these options:
Use the villain you explored in unit 1 to compare and contrast with another film villain of your choice.
You can select two entirely different villains to compare / contrast.
You can also break away from film and villains entirely by opting for a topic in pop culture. Example: Texas Rangers vs Houston Astros to explain why the Astros are more successful.
Something that means something to you personally like picking one major over another, two potential jobs or career paths that you aiming for, etc.
In a separate content page, I will provide some example topics as well as some topics that are off limits.
Essay Requirements:
Length: 1000-1200 words in total length (works cited counts toward length)
Proper formatting / layout: see template / guidance from unit 1
Primary Sources: 1-2 required (example: a film)
Secondary Sources: at least 1-2 (example: outside research from news outlets, other books, articles, theory, etc.)
NOTE on research: Combination of primary and secondary sources cannot exceed 5 in total.
Synthesis: at least 1-2 moments of clear synthesis.
MLA version 9 for source documentation
Tone / Style: formal tone, so avoid contractions, avoid 2nd person point of view, avoid slang, etc.
