For your writing topic, you will write a 5-6 page essay during which you will write a) a simple categorical argument or b) a definitional argument (both of which fall under the umbrella of Definition Arguments) on a topic of your choosing. We will be discussing lots of examples in class.
The Topic I chose to write about was Self Esteem. I drafted and turned in a proposal which my professor liked but she asked to make it more relatable to the paper requirements.
In this essay, you are asked to examine a term of social relevance/human interest and the criteria used to define that term. When you pick your subject, use the following questions to dig deeper into the topic.
How will I classify this topic?
What are the social/cultural/historical elements surrounding this topic? How do these circumstances affect the topic?
Who is most interested in this topic? Who has something at stake depending how the topic is defined? How does it affect others if we don’t define it clearly?
How can I communicate about this topic using ethos, pathos, and logos?
What evidence can I provide to reveal why this topic should be classified as ______?
How do others define this term—why is/isn’t this acceptable?
An intro section, which includes an attention- grabbing first line and brief background information.
A thesis statement, which includes the main argument. Thesis should have your claim + the (approx. 3) criteria you will use to prove your claim. The thesis should be in bold font. The thesis should appear on (or close to) the first page.
Fully developed discussion of your topic, which includes information from research material. All information must be properly cited according to MLA standards.
You must paraphrase and cite from a minimum of 4 ASU research articles. Copies of these sources must be saved in case you are asked for them. Minimum articles must be from a library research database unless you have received specific permission to use information from an internet website. ASU source citations should be in bold in WC and in the essay. (Just the citations in the essay, not the whole quote.)
