Purpose: Interpretive (Referential)
Pattern: Analysis (Description) and Evaluation
1. Read the folowing essay for the assignment below:
“The Rights of Women” by Mary Wollstonecraft (p. 329 of your textbook)
2. Using the essay you chose in step 1, write a paper of around 850 words using the interpretive purpose and the analytical and evaluative patterns that identifies the essay’s primary and secondary purposes and patterns. See Ch. 14 for a student sample of this essay, “An Analysis of ‘On Androgyny'”. Identify the author’s full name in the first sentence along with the essay’s title, but then in the rest of the essay, only refer to the author by his or her last name only. Do not use or review any secondary or internet resources for this essay. Your interpretation must be 100% your own work.
Your analysis must include at least one paragraph on each of the following:
An introduction that identifies the essay’s title and author, briefly summarizes the essay, and presents the essay’s main idea, listing its purposes and patterns.
A discussion identifying and explaining the essay’s primary purpose using the “General Characteristics” of that purpose, with paraphrases and supporting quotations.
A discussion identifying and explaining the essay’s secondary purpose using the “General Characteristics” of that purpose, with paraphrases and supporting quotations. (optional)
A discussion identifying and explaining the primary and secondary patterns of the essay to show how the patterns are used to help accomplish the essay’s purpose(s) (with supporting quotations/paraphrase as appropriate).
A conclusion which
evaluates the essay by explaining how well the author achieved the purposes and used the patterns; and
analyzes how the author’s use of purpose(s) and pattern(s) accomplishes the essay’s main idea.
Some questions to consider:
• What characteristics does the essay have that identify it as expressive, persuasive, or referential, or literary (see the “traits” at the beginning of each chapter on purpose)?
• What organizational patterns are used (refer to each chapter on pattern)?
• What are the best sentences from the essay to quote and/or paraphrase to support your interpretation and analysis?
• How do all the parts of the essay work together to present its main idea?
• Has the author successfully accomplished his/her purpose? If not, what parts of the essay are unsuccessful?
