This week’s forum will be our first test drive of doing a (quick) rhetorical analysis of an argument. Based on what you know about rhetoric so far, explain to the class how effective you found Condit’s argument and why. This is roughly what we will do in our first paper, so it’s good practice.
IMPORTANT: whether or not you agreed with her is irrelevant. Base your analysis on rhetoric:
How clear was her claim?
How well did she address counterarguments?
How well did she consider her audience?
How well did she use both emotional and logical evidence?
How well did she use ethos, pathos and logos?
Your post should include specific examples of the above to back up your answers. Your response should be roughly 7 brief paragraphs and about 250-350 words. Since it is a bit more involved, you do not need to respond to others. See the sample post below to get a general idea of how to format your response:
Celeste Condit’s claim was [state what you think her claim was here – obviously I am not going to give you the answer.] She essentially argued that [add a brief summary of her argument here in your own words. Feel free to pull a quote or partial quote to further develop and clarify your ideas.]
Condit addressed one counterargument when she [add what you think the counterargument(s) was/were and explain how effectively she handled it/them. Effectiveness is more of a spectrum than an either/or (something can be effective, somewhat effective, in the middle, largely ineffective, etc.), so make sure you explain yourself clearly.
For emotional evidence, Condit included [give one or two specific examples]. I felt these [explain how they helped or hurt Condit’s argument and why].
For logical evidence, Condit included [give one or two specific examples]. I felt these [explain how they helped or hurt Condit’s argument and why].
Her ethos [explain how effective and give example(s)]
Her pathos [explain how effective and give example(s)]
Her logos [explain how effective and give example(s)]
