One of the cool things about music is that it is generally “Genderless and Color Blind”. To prep for the essay below, listen to these two performances of the classic song, “Always on My Mind”. The first one, is presented by artist Sissel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eftFjqZFNLw The second is by Willie Nelson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7f189Z0v0Y They are singing THE SAME lyrics and the same notes, etc., but inevitably the song ends up being “different” because they each individually put their own “heart and soul” into it. The same can be said with classical songs.
Log on to YouTube and find two different performances/recordings of “The Elf-King” (Erlkönigin German) by Franz Schubert. One performance should feature a MALE singer and one performance should feature a FEMALE singer. How do the two performances differ and how are they similar? You will want to “follow along” with the listening guide on page 156 of the textbook. Remember, in the Elf-King there are 5 “characters” that are depicted….the piano represents the galloping of the horses, and the singer is asked to play 4 additional characters: a narrator, a father, his son, and the Elf-king. Nowhere does Schubert insist that the singer be male or female.
Essays should be at least one page in length.
Make sure to provide the links to both performances.
Make sure to mention the name of the singer AND the pianist.
I am looking for your honest opinion here. There are no “right or wrong” answers, but you need to convince your reader (me) as to why you prefer one over the other.
Above all, have fun with this!
