Social Media, Data Protection and Privacy assignment asks you to write a research essay on the subject of social media. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary social media encompasses “forms of [computer based technology] . . . through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content . . . .” In developing your argument you will 1) identify a controversial issue or argument pertaining to your chosen social media topic, 2) stake out a position within this controversy and then 3) defend that position with the help of research source material; in other words, this is to be a position oriented research paper, not a simple report. (see chapters 8 of your textbook for information on how to write position papers.) I will also be looking for, and marking you on, the following criteria:
A separate title page featuring a title that is interesting and informative;
An intro. paragraph leading to a clearly worded, arguable, and underlined thesis statement;
Paragraphs that are unified by topic ideas (these should appear as underlined topic sentences, which will head each of your body paragraphs);
Paragraphs that lead logically to one other via transitions;
Abstractions supported by sufficiently detailed evidence;
Adequate space given to counterarguments;
Appropriate use (including integration) of primary and secondary
source material;
Appropriate use of summary, critical analysis and literature review as required;
A conclusion that briefly recapitulates your discussion;
Consistent and appropriate tone;
Correct spelling, grammar, and mechanics;

Research Essay Format
Below is a format model that you should find helpful. Though you may strictly follow this model when composing your research essay, you need not do so. For example, depending upon your particular writing situation you might find that your literature review would be better situated in the paragraph(s) where you explain the opposing view(s), rather than the paragraph(s) where you offer a factual overview of the issues (see below). Similarly, you might want to deal with counterarguments (through rebuttal or concession) in the section where you argue for your view (see below). In short, if you do have a good reason to deviate from this format then you are welcome to do so.
