A proposal explaining the issue that you’d like to explore in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the theoretical approach/es your plan to use.
The proposal should be at least one page (double-spaced) long. This is about 300 words. You should also include a list of 5 to 6 critical articles that you intend to read for the paper.
The point of the proposal is to get you officially started on the paper. You must put ideas down on paper well-ahead of the due date in order to write a decent assignment.
For the proposal, you need to state two things clearly . First your should describe the subject of your paper. This could be any topic, character, problem, theme, issue, stylistic feature etc. of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight that you wish to study. In describing, you can offer a preliminary “argument” about this subject. Further, you could mention some of the key scenes or episodes that you would analyze closely.
Second, you need to state the theoretical approach that you plan to use in the paper. You should name the theory and theorist, and then explain some of their approaches to interpretation and/or the theoretical concepts that you will use to analyze SGGK. You should use any theoretical approach from “Reader Response” onwards. You should not use “New Criticism” (since we’ve already worked with this for the poetry paper).
List of critical articles about SGGK. List the titles and publication information (MLA format, see below) for five to six critical articles on a separate sheet as a research bibliography. You do not need to have read these articles: they are articles you have located and intend to read.
Locating Research Articles
1. Use the footnotes / bibliography in the articles that we’ve already read on Sir Gawain. This would be especially useful if a critic is working in a specific area or focused on a specific section and surveys / uses critics that discuss a theme or topic you’re interested in.
2. The Wikipedia page on SGGK is good. It has great biblio references that you can hunt up via the library catalog.
3. Do a search via the MLA Intl Bibliography Database.
When searching the database, look at titles, keywords, or abstracts (if available). This will give you a sense of whether an article might be useful.
