Discussion Week 1
There are two parts to this week’s discussion.
(a quick word about discussions–two or three sentences is not a discussion. Discussion means sharing information you have discovered and YOUR ideas about what you have found, read, listened to etc…)
Part 1
Be sure to read chapter one before you do this assignment.
Music is a HUGE part of our lives. It is intertwined in every part of our daily living. As you read the first couple of chapters in the textbook, I want you to image what the average person’s life was like 100 years ago. The only music you heard was either played or sung by you and your family, or at a barn dance on a Saturday night or perhaps all gathered around you or your neighbor’s radio for a live weekly music broadcast. Everyone wasn’t fortunate enough to have access to musical instruments or a radio. Imagine how important the music at these gatherings would have been to you and your friends and family.
Now for a little experiment. I want you to experience 24 hours in a row with NO MUSIC AT ALL. No ipod, no tunes on your computer, no car radio, no anything. (I know this might not be entirely possible—music at a grocery store etc… but do your best to avoid all music!) The exception to this is that you will schedule a musical event to listen to or attend. It can be music at a bar, music at home during dinner with friends or family, music at an outdoor venue, etc…. But it must be PLANNED and that is your only music for that 24 hours.
I want you all to think about what life was like in relationship to music for someone living in the 1920’s and to get a tiny taste of what it might be like NOT to have music completely accessible 24/7.
Share your observations on this little experiment with your classmates.
Part 2
Read the first three chapters before you do this assignment
Research the life and career of your favorite country artist. Dig into their roots and their musical influences all the way back to the earliest country music artists, exploring each generation of musical influences back to the artists discussed in the first three chapters of the textbook. Utilize interviews, documentaries and live recordings to aid in your research. (YouTube is fantastic resource for this.). Please discuss your favorite artist AND THEIR MUSICAL ROOTS with your classmates. Please share the links of videos and recordings that you found interesting.
Your initial posts are due by Friday June 17th, 5:00 PM
Your responses to your classmates are due by Sunday June 19, 11:30 pm.
Grading Rubric
5 points for discussion of part 1
5 points for discussion of part 2–you must include history, roots and musical influences.
