Below is an outline I created, however, you do not have to go in this direction, but it is important to briefly mention thosethings if you could.
Ideology of Hindutva; Future of Secularism in India
My paper will discuss the Ideology of Hindutva and the future of Secularism in India. The ideology and origins of Hindutva will be discussed, as well as the history, present, and future of secularism in India. Additionally, the mass mobilization of people to support this ideology and the factors connected to it with the rise of the BJP will be highlighted. Below are some of the things I will be talking about in my paper.
Ideology of Hindutva
Origins of Hindutva (Sarvarkar, Hedgewar, RSS, e.t.c)
Difference between Hindutva and Hinduism
Rise of Ethnic nationalism (2014- ). Establish a shared myth of common Hindu identity for Indian Nationhood.
Defining secularism
One of India’s distinguishing traits since independence is its ability to maintain democratic governance despite significant ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity. Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister, and the ruling Indian National Congress called for an Indian form of secularism to bring the country’s different cultures together under one umbrella in the early years after independence. Nehru frequently stated that India’s diverse culture was one of the country’s greatest assets. Hindu nationalists who later populated the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its numerous ideological branches have consistently held a radically different perspective; they see India as a majoritarian, not a multicultural, nation-state.
Secularism
Secularism is in the constitution of India, with a right to practice religion freely and not be discriminated based on religion, however, as we have seen with the rise of BJP and their linkage with RSS, which actively promotes the Ideology of Hindutva, secularism has come under threat in current day India. The political wing of India is dominated by the RSS. BJP was formed with leaders from the RSS. The three highest ranking officers of the BJP, Modi, Amit Shah, and M. Venkaiah Naidu, were all former members of the RSS. Thus, the ideology behind RSS, that mother India is a Hindu nation is weaved into the very concept of what the BJP is trying to do as a political party.
Nehru was one of the few members of the Congress who was truly committed to secularism. Many prominent members of Congress were adamantly opposed to it. They attempted to derail Nehru’s vision during his lifetime, and they became even more aggressive after his death. During his lifetime, Nehru was unable to give much attention to the educational system. It couldn’t be changed. The old textbooks, which were established during the British time and had a communal perspective, were never revised. They were approved by Congress’s top leaders. Those who did not have the courage to demand significant changes in history textbooks were unable to do so. As a result, most Indians grew up with a communal ethos, which could be subtle or overt.
Secularism is highly necessary if India has to survive as a nation. But apart from survival of Indian nationalism and Indian unity, secularism is necessary for modern democratic polity. And this need for secular polity becomes much greater if the country happens to be as diverse and plural as India. Whether secularism can preserve its status as the country’s defining ideology will be determined in part by a confluence of political forces, including the BJP’s future electoral success and the opposition’s counter-narratives.
Violence/discrimination against Muslims/ Other things I may discuss
The BJP’s rise to power in 2014 marked a turning point: Hindu nationalists no longer had to fear retaliation from the police and, in some cases, were even integrated into the power structure. In Haryana, Gau Raksha Dal-affiliated organizations, armed with field hockey clubs, patrol the highway connecting Chandigarh and New Delhi, inspecting cars that are likely to be transporting cows. In Maharashtra, the government has introduced honorary animal welfare officers as a new civil service position in each district. All of the applicants are gau rakshaks from various militias who routinely capture accused traffickers and destroy their cargo. They have brutally killed many Muslims and are not caught—-even when trials have been conducted, they have not gone anywhere.
There are local cow protectors that have informal check points on roads and go after cow smugglers. 90% of Hindu violence for cows has occurred since Modi came to power in 2014.
Ayodhya movement
August 2019. The BJP used its large parliamentary majority to end the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and declare it a union territory.
Beef ban
Maharashtra passed a law making religious conversion extremely difficult to prevent adoption of christianity and islam
Shah Bano case linkage with rise of Hindu Nationalism under Rajiv Gandhi
