A positive and mutually respectful relationship between parents and early childhood professionals is essential to ensure that you’re providing the best possible learning experience to the children in your care. To this end, it’s very important that parents, teachers, and caregivers share similar views on how children learn and should be treated. For this assignment, you’ll be interviewing two parents, at least one teacher, and the center director about their beliefs on discipline and how they expect their children to behave. You’ll then write a narrative summary of your interviews and your findings. Please carefully review the project requirements and the explicit direction for each interview below.
You’ll be conducting a total of four interviews for this assignment. Interviews 1 and 2 will be done with two different parents who currently have a young child (or children) younger than eight years old. Your parent interviews do not have to be parents at your field experience. Interview 3 will be done with an early childhood teacher who works at your field placement and the final interview will be with the director of your field placement. You’ll be interviewing each person about their views on authority, respect, obedience, and young children. You’ll be exploring their expectations about how children should behave and be treated. You’ll want to find out how guidance and discipline is handled both at home and in the classroom. You’ll need to create at least 10 of your own interview questions for each person, and will submit them along with any notes that you take during your interview with your final summary.
When you’ve completed all of the required interviews you’ll compose your written summary. Your summary should be a minimum of 1,500 words, double spaced, and written in 12-point font.
You’ll need to
• Identify each person interviewed, including name, position (parent, teacher, or director), and background information, such as occupation, family type, educational experiences, and so on
• Provide interview questions and answers for each person you interview.
• Provide a narrative summary of each interview and explain each person’s views in at least one separate paragraph
• Compare and contrast the information gathered from each interview and explain how the differences or similarities could either cause problems in the classroom and in parent-teacher-director relationships or support a harmonious relationship among the three
• Examine how discipline is handled in your field placement and determine whether the teacher and director responses to your interview questions correlate to what is actually being done in the classroom; provide one example of a child misbehaving that you’ve witnessed during your field hours that supports your findings
• State your opinion as to whether you feel that the parents, teacher, and director are working together to provide the best possible learning environment for the children appropriately; support your opinion with either examples of what you’ve witnessed in the classroom or suggestions for improvement to the current methods being used
